IS HEITKAMP WAVERING IN MAKING HER RED-STATE STAND? Sen. Heidi Heitkamp is the last Democrat in a North Dakota statewide elected office, a seat the strident moderate won in 2012, a dozen years after a failed run for governor and a bout with cancer. And now with a grueling reelection campaign ahead of her in a state where President Donald Trump is beloved, POLITICO’s Burgess Everett reports Heitkamp is “in a most unique political situation — a one-woman North Dakota Democratic Party simultaneously shouldering national Democratic hopes of eventually taking back the Senate. Her future amounts to a crucial test of whether the Democrats’ big tent still stands.”

But when it comes to that future — meaning whether she’ll run for reelection — the Senate Agriculture Committee member says she’s undecided. “Her independence, and her closeness to Trump, will be a boon if she does run again,” Burgess writes after spending time with Heitkamp as she made the rounds in her home state. “Republicans respect Heitkamp, and Sen. John Hoeven (R-N.D.) said she will enter as the favorite. But North Dakotans, Republicans say, will ultimately side with Trump’s party over Heitkamp’s.”…
