A well delivered inspiring State of State message by New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham.

This is the moment we’ve been waiting for, Rudy.
All through this campaign, I talked with you – and with folks all across the state – about what we could do to build a brighter future for New Mexico. And through those long months, I wanted nothing more than to roll up my sleeves and get to work – to start making a real difference for all of the families who shared with me their hopes, their worries, their concerns.
That work starts now, Rudy. I recently delivered my first State of the State address, kicking off a new legislative session in Santa Fe. We have a clean slate ahead of us, brimming with possibility. Here’s where I plan to start:
Public education. In my budget, I’m calling for a half-billion-dollar investment in our nation’s students. We’re going to give teachers a much overdue raise and make sure they never have to reach deep into their own pockets to buy basic supplies for their students. And, because we know a strong start in school can transform a child’s life forever, this is the year we must put New Mexico on a path toward universal pre-k.
Gun violence. Every year in our state, 400 people lose their lives to gun violence – and so many of those deaths could be prevented by passing commonsense gun safety legislation. That’s why I’m asking the legislature to pass reforms that would strengthen background checks and prevent individuals convicted of assault from purchasing or possessing a gun. I will sign those bills.
The opioid crisis. So many families have been devastated by this crisis – and under my administration, we will strengthen prevention programs, expand access to overdose-reversal drugs and improve treatment services for those with addiction.
And that’s just the beginning: To hear more about my top priorities for New Mexico this legislative session, you can watch the complete State of the State address here.
We have the drive, enthusiasm and opportunity we need to accomplish all that and more in the next 39 days. But here’s what matters most: I promise to keep listening – to the people of New Mexico, to people like you. Thank you so much for sticking with me on this journey. Rest assured: Your voice will be heard in Santa Fe.

Michelle
