Adapting to a Changing Climate
The complexity and global scope of climate change can overwhelm our sense of agency. Yet preservation has an important role to play in both mitigating the impacts of climate change and adapting to its effects. This subtheme will highlight innovative approaches and provide practical guidance to help preservationists move from climate concern to climate action.
- Preservation as Climate Action: Join a diverse panel of specialists working in preservation to hear real world applications of how our work can be more explicitly “green.”
- Solar Energy Approaches to Historic Properties: Learn how to help historic buildings survive in a time when fossil fuels are no longer in use.
- Aligning Preservation with the Climate Crisis: Four practitioners will share their work in this arena and discuss next steps for our field, including research uncovering tensions between historic building protections and energy performance codes.
- Communicating Climate Change and the Value of Place: Learn specific best practices promoted by FEMA and other state and local agencies for risk communications, promoting behavioral change, and available tools and resources.
