As the COVID-19 pandemic continues throughout the country, one thing changed from 2020, when much of the world was first impacted, into 2021: Variants.

Scientists kept close track of mutations made to COVID-19 and which variants were considered of concern. 

Some variants were more aggressive in infections than others, most notably the Delta variant, first designated as a variant of interest by the World Health Organization in early April.

Growing Forward: End of the year and looking onward

It’s been nearly eight months since New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed the Cannabis Regulation Act and cannabis sales are expected to start in about four more months. 

Throughout this year, Growing Forward, the collaborative podcast between NM Political Report and New Mexico PBS, has been following the progress of both applicants and state regulators and highlighting issues that have arised since April. 

In the last episode of the 2021 and the podcast’s third season, Growing Forward takes a look at one major issue that surrounds almost all aspects of life in New Mexico: water.

2021 Top Stories #3: Cannabis legalized

One of the most notable things that happened in 2021 was the legalization of recreational-use cannabis. 

The use of medical cannabis has been legal in New Mexico for more than a decade, but full legalization did not become a reality for New Mexico until earlier this year, during a special legislative session devoted mostly to legalization.

2021 Top Stories #4: Drought continues

Gripped by decades-long drought, water managers in New Mexico faced tough choices this year, including ending the irrigation season early.

The year’s water woes began in the winter, when below average snowpack, warm temperatures and dry soil conditions limited the spring runoff.

On top of that, New Mexico owed water to Texas under the Rio Grande Compact from previous years.
