“House lawmakers will get together for the first time of the new Congress today to talk about the upcoming farm bill, as Republicans take over the House Ag gavel. Thompson is leading an unofficial “listening session” at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center in Harrisburg from 3 to 5 p.m…We’re expecting a variety of farmers, producers, agriculture educators and House members at the event, which food and ag groups are closely tracking for a glimpse into Thompson’s upcoming priorities. In addition to Thompson (R-Pa.), Rep. Austin Scott (R-Ga.), the likely incoming chair of the House Ag commodities and risk management subcommittee, and Rep. Doug LaMalfa (R-Calif.), who is poised to lead the forestry and conservation subcommittee, are expected to attend. Reps. Dan Meuser (R-Pa.), Mary Miller (R-Ill.), Derrick Van Orden (R-Wis.), Dwight Evans(D-Pa.) and Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) are also set to be there…Incoming bills: Lawmakers are eyeing a slew of new and old legislation to bring up ahead of the farm bill. Pingree is planning to introduce an updated version of her Local Food And Regional Market Supply Act, known as the Local FARMS Act, according to a person familiar with the discussions. The previous version of the bill aimed in part to make fruit and vegetable prescriptions for low-income individuals more accessible, expand the Seniors Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program and provide more resources for schools to buy locally-sourced foods.”
